Why Do Americans Fail To Understand Science?

This morning I was listening to the Minnesota Public Radio Midmorning podcast. In particular, I was listening to a discussion of the topic “New polls indicates a dim view of U.S. scientific achievement” (listen to it here). The short of it is, there is a new poll that found (surprise!) the vast majority [...]

Infinite Jest

The day before yesterday I started in on David Foster Wallace’s book Infinite Jest. I can already see that it is going to be an Illuminatus! Trilogy sort of book, one that warps my brain and kicks it up and down the block a little. This is good.
I’m sitting in my car, in [...]

Helium Lunatics

Today I received an email from the website Helium informing me that I had been granted “Premier Writer” status.  I thought this odd since I had only written three articles on the site.  Apparently the fact that those articles were well reviewed by Helium users had granted me the coveted “Premier Writer” badge.  Yippee!!

The Palin/Couric Interview

From the “you can’t make this stuff up” department:
Couric: You’ve cited Alaska’s proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?
Sarah Palin: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and, on our other side, the land-boundary that we have with Canada. It’s [...]

Substance (Part 1)

A recent post I made in which I recommended we all get off our asses and do whatever we can to get Obama elected provoked a response from a commenter named Andy (Hi Andy!) who suggested that I was a “nothing more than a blindly faithful Obama supporter who is full of hate”.  Now, admittedly, [...]

Fear

For the first time in the last year I honestly believe there is a chance that Barack Obama will not be the next president of the United States and it scares me.
John McCain may be a cantankerous, dangerous, clueless, hypocritical liar, but when his political strategists decided to bring Palin in he benefited big time. [...]

Ars Technica Breakdown of Loopholes in FISA Legislation and Repercussions

These are some of the actual problems with the FISA legislation, the nuts and bolts, as broken down by Ars Technica:

Under current law, the government must obtain court approval to tap a phone line or fiber optic cable in the United States even if the other end of the communication is abroad. An application [...]

Obama

If I vote, I’ll likely still vote for Obama, but I’ve lost my faith in him. I do not believe he is going to bring the change we need. He’s probably a better choice than a senile warmongering liar like McCain but he’s not going to restore this country to what it was [...]

God As I Knew Him – Part 2

In Part 1 of my series on my evolving relationship with God I explained that as a child God was basically my supernatural defender. I counted on him to keep the demons at bay and help me not to have bad dreams. This changed, however, when I had my first encounters with sexual [...]
