For the last five years I have been in flux. It began when, after 30 years around Jehovah’s Witnesses, my faith shattered and I became a freethinker, humanist and secular Buddhist. I reprogrammed myself, or more accurately, re-educated myself. I studied more broad than deep. My goal wasn’t to become [...]

Connections

I had intended today to post a synopsis of a really interesting discussion I’ve been involved in on a UU Theology mailing list about the historicity of Jesus. I still may do that, but there is something more pressing I want to try to write about even though the attempt will be something of [...]

The Global Scourge of Friend Rock and How You Can Help Your Musicmaking Friends

Hi,
This is your old buddy Ryan and I’m writing today on behalf of all your friends who are aspiring musicians like me.
I recently became aware of a tragic affliction that, er, afflicts you gentle reader, that keeps you up nights, that causes you weeping and gnashing of teeth. Yes, I have learned of your [...]

A History of My Guitars

And now for something completely different…
When I was in 4th grade I decided to follow in my big brother Rhett’s footsteps and join school band. He had played percussion and I chose french horn. Now, if you know me you know I am not a french horn player but rather a guitarist. [...]

RPM Challenge

Last night Es and I went to Ikea to get a rug, end table and a lamp for our library upstairs.  It’s amazing how the addition of a few simple things like that has changed the room from one that we rarely enter (except, obviously, to get books) to one in which we relaxed and [...]

The Life and Times of Red

I’ve had other mice, but Red was my favorite. I adopted him from the humane society and even then he had weight issues. I tried giving him healthier food options, but maybe he just had a slow metabolism. He enjoyed just laying around, and whenever I took him out, he would just sit in my hand or on my shoulder. My wife made this tribute to him shortly after he passed away – set to music written by one of my favorite musicians and performed by another of my favorites. I know Red wasn’t a dog or a cat, but he was still a friend.

The Lavone

Sometimes I can’t really believe that The Lavone is history. Right now is one of those times. Yeah, The Lavone was a band, but it was a band in the way that your mother is a female. Which is to say, it’s technically accurate but fails to convey the whole story.

Nice work Rob!  I love ya.  Also, phenomenal work Eric, Hiromi, Aaron, and whoever else worked on that album.  Goooood stuff.

a personal history of the internet music biz

I have long been interested in the music industry, or more accurately, alternatives to it. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses growing up, I long believed that the mainstream music industry with it’s indulgent lifestyle was dangerous for a Christian to get involved in. It wasn’t inherently immoral, just a temptation-filled pool to be [...]

Blogging the Rolling Stone Top 500: #494 – “She’s So Unusual” by Cyndi Lauper
I wasn’t sure I wanted to listen to this one. I remember the brief world of Cyndi Lauper hysteria, the Cyndi Lauper jokes, the frenetic videos on MTV. I was sure it would seem really dated, really cheesy, and well, it did [...]
