Infinite Jest

The day before yesterday I started in on David Foster Wallace’s book Infinite Jest. I can already see that it is going to be an Illuminatus! Trilogy sort of book, one that warps my brain and kicks it up and down the block a little. This is good.
I’m sitting in my car, in [...]

I poured kettle cooked chili lime peanuts on a tuna salad sandwich for lunch… strange, but surprisingly tasty #

Holding Back the Storm

I was just reading Thich Nhat Hanh on the subject of impermanence. He makes note of the fact that it appears that our suffering in life comes from the impermanence of things. Life itself is impermanent as death takes us all away in time and when we lose the ones we love, we [...]

A History of My Guitars

And now for something completely different…
When I was in 4th grade I decided to follow in my big brother Rhett’s footsteps and join school band. He had played percussion and I chose french horn. Now, if you know me you know I am not a french horn player but rather a guitarist. [...]

New Years plans

I hate the idea of New Years resolutions.  They seem to me to basically be a general waste of time, just kind of desperate grabs at hitting the reset button on your life to do the things that you know you really ought to have been doing all along.  That said, I don’t have any [...]

20000 words

If the goal was 20000 words I would be done now. Unfortunately it’s 50000, which means I’m not even halfway there. Still, the month isn’t halfway done yet either. It felt really good to pass the 20k mark this morning. If I can have a good lunch hour I might even [...]

confidence

Between the bus ride in this morning and lunch I managed another 1800 or so words so far today. Even if I write no more today I’m still on pace. I need to average about 1667 words a day to make it to 50000. Right now I’m a tiny bit ahead of [...]

random stuff

So here I am at work after the weekend of Esther’s birthday and boy do I ever wish it was still the weekend.  I had a great time and she did too which is about all we could have asked for.  We went to Hastings, Red Wing, Lake City, and also drove up the Wisconsin [...]

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and the sadness of finishing a book

Last night I recorded something, something improvised and sort of angry in my generally dispassionate type of anger. I don’t know how to describe it or if it will be on my album. I’m not even sure I enjoyed recording it but I think I did. It’s called “A Glorious Anger”.
