Personal Rant, Feel Free to Ignore, Not Quality Writing

I called my mom yesterday.  It was the end of a long game of chicken.  The last time we had spoken I had gotten sick of the fact that she never called me, she just waited around for me to call her and then when I finally did call her she acted as if she didn’t want to talk to me anyhow or yelled at me for not calling more often or tried to pump me for information about what was going on in Reed and Robbie’s lives, or just wanted to complain about the Witnesses or whatever.  It was always a fight or a pointless call.  So, I decided to see how long it would take before she would call me if I didn’t call her first.  It turned out to be a looong time, and I am pretty certain if would have gone on forever.  For all the complaining my mom does about how her kids are lost to her, she does absolutely nothing to reach out to them either.  Pot, meet kettle.

Saints 31, Vikings 28

It is with a heavy heart, but no great sense of surprise, that I take to my keyboard to write about the latest failure of my beloved Vikings. The Vikings have fallen, tragically, to the New Orleans Saints in the the NFC Championship Game, 31-28. As a Minnesota sports fan since childhood, I am used to seeing heartbreaking defeats such as this one. The Vikings had the game won, despite repeatedly fumbling the ball in the second half. They were in field-goal range, time was expiring, and they had simply to execute a simple play, a run up the middle, to give their field-goal kicker the opportunity to win it. They were called for a 12-men-on-the-field penalty, knocked out of field-goal range, and then Brett Farve threw an unfortunate pass that was picked off. I do not blame Favre for this. I blame whoever the idiot was who was the 12th man on the field. The game was won before that play. Brett’s play wasn’t smart, but it should never have even happened. The team let him down. They let him down again in the overtime and the Saints won on a field goal to win it.

New Years Resolutions

As a general rule I don’t believe in New Years resolutions.  It seems that if a person needs to resolve at the start of a year to do something different, it is just as easily something they probably should have been doing all along.  Each day we need to take care of that day.  Making resolutions for the coming year is kind of silly and mostly destined to fail.

New Decade

So, for the fourth time in my life, I find myself at the turning of a new decade, a completely arbitrary but seemingly meaningful event.  I remember 1979 giving way to 1980 (ooohhh), 1989 moving on to 1990 (ahhhhhh), 1999 being replaced ever so gently by 2000 (millennial!!!), and now 2009 giving way to 2010 (meh).
