I voted in 2004 with no problem so I assumed that voting this year would be no problem.  Clearly I was a registered voter.  Just for fun, however, I decided to verify whether or not I was using the online voter registration tool at Obama’s website and lo and behold…  I was not.  I had been removed from the rolls.

I re-registered and now I am definitely a registered voter.  However, I became curious about how it had transpired that I was no longer a registered voter since the 2004 Presidential election.  Heck, when I voted in ’04, I only had to show up at my polling place with my ID showing that I lived in the neighborhood and I was allowed to vote.  What had changed?

A lot.  Over the last 6 years, the right to vote has been getting harder and harder to come by.  Over three million people voted in 2004 and had their votes thrown away, ignored.  It’s not just “defective” voting machines, where there used to be an inalienable right today there is a landmine that you need to navigate with state attorney’s general purging voter registrations left and right to make sure your voice can’t be heard. If you’re not absolutely sure that you are going to be allowed to vote on November 4th, make sure and do it today.  Don’t trust that you’ll be OK.  Take a moment and be as sure as you can be.  Sure, they can steal your vote in any number of ways, but at least this will give you a fighting chance.
