I’ve been doing some research, in response to repeated claims by many that Christian leaders have formed this country into what it is today.

First, a list of presidents who were essentially irreligious (not belonging to any church):

William Henry Harrison
Andrew Johnson
Ulysses S. Grant
Rutherford B. Hayes
Franklin Pierce

Next, presidents who were deists:

Abraham Lincoln
Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
James Monroe

Now, how about Unitarian presidents, (who, as non-Trinitarians and believers in the non-divinity of Jesus and salvation by our actions wouldn’t be considered Christians by most Christians today):

John Adams
John Quincy Adams
Millard Filmore
William Howard Taft

That’s 13 presidents so far who would not be considered Christians by the majority of Christians. So, who’s left?

The following are presidents who were nominally Christian but questionable…

George Washington – Episcopal, debated about whether he took communion, many believe him to have been a deist

Andrew Jackson – Joined the Presbyterian church a year after his presidency. No prior religious affiliation.

Martin Van Buren – Never joined a church, funeral was held at a Reformed Church, religious views were doubtful.

William Henry Harrison – Died one month after his inauguration. Was an Episcopalian but had not even started taking communion, indicating he was essentially irreligious.

John Tyler – Episcopalian, took a non-denominational approach to God, strong supporter of religious tolerance and the separation of church and state.

Zachary Taylor – Raised Episcopalian, never took communion.

Two other presidents were Quakers, which is a group that is sorta Christian but quite different:

Herbert Hoover
Richard Nixon

Leaving the following definitively Christian presidents:

James K. Polk – Methodist
James Buchanan – Presbyterian
James Garfield – Disciples of Christ
Chester A. Arthur – Episcopalian
Grover Cleveland – Presbyterian
William McKinley – Methodist
Teddy Roosevelt – Dutch Reformed
Warren G. Harding – Baptist
Calvin Coolidge – Congregationalist
Franklin D. Roosevelt – Episcopalian
Harry Truman – Baptist
Dwight Eisenhower – Presbyterian

John F. Kennedy – Catholic
Lyndon Johnson – Disciples of Christ
Gerald Ford – Episcopal
Jimmy Carter – Baptist
Ronald Reagan – Presbyterian
George H.W. Bush – Episcopal
Bill Clinton – Baptist
George W. Bush – Methodist

So, I count 20 presidents who actively adhered to mainstream Christianity and 21 who were either deists, Quakers, Unitarians, freethinkers, irreligious or only nominally associated with any sort of Christian church. The majority of the Christian leadership of this country has been since the 19th century, after the backlash against enlightenment thinking started in this country. The early days of this country, however, were built on deism, the philosophical ideas of the enlightenment, Unitarianism and secular thought. The “god of the nature and the philosophers”, not the Christian god.
