I can’t exactly pin down when I first decided that of all the things to be when I grew up, a writer was the most tempting. I think it maybe came from reading H. G. Wells as a kid. I got a Wells collection from the Westview Elementary school library when I was maybe in 2nd grade with a red cover. It was an old hard-bound volume containing such classics as The Time Machine and The First Men In the Moon. Reading those books made me want to be a writer when I grew up.

I am, technically, a published author (I’ve contributed to and co-authored multiple computer software related books) and I obviously write quite a bit here on my blog but as of yet I can’t say “I’m a writer” so I guess that childhood dream is still out there waiting… I think that’s why I want to do NaNoWriMo. I think that I hope that if I can do that once it will catch on and I’ll become a writer. Who knows?

Every year for the last four or five years I have sworn to myself that it was finally the year that I was going to do NaNoWriMo and every year I have failed to do it.. Will this finally be the year? Well, the acquisition of this Palm Tungsten certainly has me optimistic. It’s much easier to sneak away for a few minutes of writing in the middle of my hectic life when I am carrying a word processor in my pocket 24 hours a day. OK, maybe not 24 hours… I do grudgingly sleep… but you get the point.

Is this the year that I finally finish a bad novel? Could be!

This morning my iTunes (perhaps in retaliation for yesterdays rant about the advantages of vinyl) loaded my phone up with a great playlist. See, I’m attempting to listen to my entire iTunes library and to that end I’ve created a smart playlist containing only music with a playcount of 0. At the beginning of this experiment I reset all the playcounts to 0 so everything would get included. At the start of every day I randomly load my Moto SLVR iTunes phone (no, I have no iPod nor iPhone but I would graciously accept a 160 GB iPod Classic for a gift if somebody felt like getting me one) with as much as it can hold from my unplayed list and I listen throughout the day at work. Some days are better than others. Today has been great. Komeda, Tom Waits, Beatles, Kinks, M. Ward, Mozart… It’s not “intentional listening” but it is enjoyable.
