So yesterday Microsoft unveiled Vista, the super-awesome-wowee-zowee next incarnation of Windows, the operating system for the majority of the world’s PCs.  The headlines tell the tale:

These were culled from Google News and, while there are some neutral and a few positive stories out there as well, they seem to represent a decent chunk of the opinion about Vista.  It is pretty much: So what?  Most people I’ve read basically consider Vista to be something that maybe they might think about moving to in a year or two when the bugs are ironed out a bit and there is a compelling reason to massively upgrade their PC to do it.

Compare this to the furor surrounding Apple’s iPhone or even the craziness around the launch of Windows XP way back when and the message is clear.  We are no longer living in the world of the operating system.  We are living in the world of the Internet-connected digital device and OS’s just aren’t sexy anymore…  not even the really cool ones.

And let’s face it, compared to earlier Windows releases, Vista is really cool.  Whereas XP was basically Windows 2000 with an ugly, bulging new user-interface and a slew of new virus vulnerabilities, Vista is actually a new beast.  I’ve not used it yet, but reviews tend to say it’s really not bad, not great, but compared to previous Windows incarnations, not bad.

It could be, though, that the real reason people don’t care much is that Apple released Vista a few years ago:
