So, I read an awful lot of stuff. One odd thing that I have noticed is that there are huge giant books with lots of pages and lots of words that I just fly through and there are other books, smaller, thinner, less wordy books, that it takes me FOREVER to read. Right now I’m attempting to plow through one of those and I’m starting to wonder why I’m doing it.

The book in question is “Skywriting By Word of Mouth” by John Lennon. I love the music of John Lennon. His music and personal philosophies reflected in that music reveal an interesting and complex individual who really wanted peace and happiness for everyone. He was a great man and his lyrics are powerful (as a general rule) because they are personal and direct. His writing, on the other hand, is anything but personal, direct or powerful. It seems to be nothing but word games and playing with no real point. It tells stories that aren’t stories using words that don’t communicate. As near as I can tell, this stuff was written just as a way to amuse himself, a way to goof around and occupy his brain, not as a way to say anything at all. Although it feels witty at first and is amusing, after reading enough of it (and by “enough” I mean the first 86 pages of the book) it just becomes a chore to work through it. Other than serving as a potential insight into the workings of his mind I am uncertain why I need to finish reading this book. However, I have a new rule for myself which is that I need to finish all the books I start and since I promised myself that I am going to do it, I will. It’s just, well, this one is a hard one. Please John, just say SOMETHING before the end of the book…
